The first Sealed Paper Packaging

The first Sealed Paper Packaging

Dusty sugar or flour packs in the supermarket or in your kitchen? This problem will finally be solved thanks to the first tightly Sealed Paper Packaging which was launched by Bosch Packaging Technology and BillerudKorsnäs beginning of June.

The new solution enables to pack products such as sugar, flour or grain into dust-tight, sustainable monomaterial-paper instead of polymer film. As a result retailers and consumers profit from clean shelves, high product protection and improved product quality. The packaging is produced and sealed on the PME ZAP, the first vertical form, fill and seal machine (VFFS) with the new ZAP-Module. It allows a partial coating with the sealing agent which preserves the paper’s monomaterial character. Until now, it was only possible to fill into pre-made paper bags or have them produced and glued on a mandrel wheel machine. The VFFS concept offers more flexibility regarding formats and pack styles and it is very popular on the market.

The secret of the Sealed Paper Packaging lies in the new machine technology combined with the special developed paper Axello®ZAP from BillerudKorsnäs. It is more durable and reliably withstands the strong mechanical requirements during the sealing process. Furthermore it is recyclable which increases its appeal to eco-conscious consumers.

“A lot of consumers expressed their wish to package sugar, a natural product, in appropriate packaging material without plastic and make it easy to open. Paper bags are an excellent choice, but at the same time have to meet our requirements in regards to shelf-life, stability, printability and hygienic aspects”, says Karine Förmer, product manager at Pfeifer & Langen. “With Bosch’s PME ZAP and Billerud Kornsäs Axello®ZAP paper, we found an ideal solution.” Being a big German sugar producer, Pfeifer & Langen meets the trend for sustainability with this innovative packaging. Its quality sugar is now available on the supermarket shelfs.
