Arla Foods is a Danish dairy farmer co-operative producing a wide range of dairy products sold worldwide. In October 2012, the company was awarded a contract by a German private label retailer to supply premium cheese. This required swift action to set up a supply chain for two product sizes by integrating new, efficient secondary packaging equipment. Arla turned to Bosch for speedy delivery.
Arla first saw Bosch’s integrated topload cartoner Sigpack TTM at Interpack 2011. After, the two companies continued discussing the technology, and in January 2012, Arla visited the Bosch Packaging Systems plant in Beringen, Switzerland, for a first-hand look at the machine.
Just one month after the retailer contract was won, Bosch and Arla signed an agreement to install the Sigpack TTM at Arla’s Skanderborg, Denmark plant. With Arla needing to send products in a short timeframe, the machine was put on an expedited schedule – but Bosch delivered and installed the Sigpack TTM ahead of time. This allowed Arla to fulfill its customer obligations timely and efficiently. Kim Søvang, Arla’s process, technology and development (PTD) manager, highlighted: “Bosch identified our pressing needs and delivered over and above what was expected.”
Arla supplies numerous brands, including the House of Castello, known for a semi-circular shape that, with its soft and heavy nature, presents a toploading challenge. The cartons are slightly larger than the packaged cheese, requiring highly accurate placement. As a result, Bosch tailored the machine to Arla’s needs.
Søvang said: “We are extremely happy with the Sigpack TTM, especially about its efficiency, which is above our expectations. Most importantly, Bosch has helped us to keep our customers happy, enabling us to grow our business around the world with the support of our new committed packaging partner.”
Arla is so satisfied with the Sigpack TTM that meanwhile another was ordered and already delivered.
