Dr. Cyrus S. Poonawalla believes that every child in the world should be granted access to inexpensive bacterial and viral vaccines. For this reason, he founded Serum Institute of India in 1966, which has ever since been supplying children all over the world with vaccines such as pentavalent and vaccines against MMR.
Serum Institute is the first company across Asia to be qualified by the World Health Organization (WHO); it supplies its products to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). India’s leading biotech company today produces billions of different vaccine doses annually under modern, cGMP-compliant conditions. “Such a modern facility must be equipped with highly reliable and state-of-the-art machines,” Dr. S. D. Ravetkar, executive director, Serum Institute of India, underlines.
Safely filled and closed
To date Serum Institute has installed five lines from Bosch Packaging Technology in Pune. The company handles vials on an FLC, an FLP and an FLM filling and closing line; ampoules and vials are filled and sealed on an ALF combi line, while freeze-dried vials are capped on a stand-alone VRK vial capper. An additional FXS 2020 fills and closes pre-sterilized syringes.
Serum Institute especially values the trustful cooperation with Bosch. “Often it’s the small things that make a big difference,” Dr. Ravetkar says. “For instance, easy documentation and validation processes make life easier for our machine operators. With every project, the lines are adapted even better to our requirements.” These are good prospects for the current project, a new FLC vial line from Crailsheim – and also for further accomplishing Dr. Poonawalla’s mission.
