Banking on biscuits: accelerating demand creates new opportunities

Biscuit Line

The market demand for biscuits and savory crackers is on the rise, creating new opportunities for food manufacturers to develop and strengthen their brands. According to Global Industry Analysts, the global bakery industry is projected to reach 410 billion US dollars in annual revenue by 2015.  The market growth is raising demand for fully-automated, tailored systems that reduce labor costs and enable more hygienic processing.

Automation and flexibility
For a commodity like biscuits, efficient and automated technologies with high-capacity process lines can increase profit margins. Equipment needs to be designed for high-quality output and must be easy to operate at the same time, to meet current and future requirements . In addition, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) continues to be an important factor in purchasing decisions. In manufacturing facilities, where space is a premium, high-speed automated lines enable greater productivity within an overall reduced footprint.

Training is another cost driver as it is difficult to find skilled personal. As a rule, automated packaging lines need fewer operators compared to semi-automated lines. New automated lines also come up with advanced Human Machine Interface (HMI) that is  easy and intuitive to use, reducing the downtime required for training.

As manufacturers often pack different products on the same line, packaging system flexibility is key to handle different pack styles and configurations for biscuits. This enables manufacturers to switch production to suit various product characteristics and packsizes. Flexible automation allows manufacturers to quickly and easily respond to changing market demands, such as e.g. different packstyles and the increasingly popular trend of single-serve packaging.

Focus on hygiene
Concerns regarding food safety are rising all over the world, tightening regulations regarding hygienic processing and packaging. New automated lines from Bosch are designed with focus on hygiene. Streamlined designs e.g. prevent to trap products in holes and crevices. Automation is thereby inherently more hygienic than semi-automatic operations because fewer operators come into contact with food, thus reducing the potential for contamination.

As food manufacturers attempt to meet the increasing global demand for biscuits of all types, incorporating automated fully integrated packaging solutions will be crucial for success.

Above all, manufacturers need packaging systems suppliers able to act as consultants to help them find the best solution for their specific requirements. Bosch Packaging Systems AG brings more than 50 years of experience with automated biscuits packaging – expertise that manufacturers can leverage to help boost brands and seize and increase market share.

  1. Automation may be the right choice for packaging line, since it give positive impact such as decreased cost. And in the same time potentially it will improve efficiency and high degree of reliability.

  2. I really like the point about hygiene focus. Since it is dealing with food, so it is not only about doing something quicker and quicker, fulfilling demands,or just increasing profit, without thinking about it’s safety to customers.
