In mid-may, Bosch Packaging Technology partnered up with one of the leading providers of renewable packaging material, BillerudKorsnäs, in Stuttgart for a rendezvous on trends in packaging sugar, flour, and grain.
Trends and innovation in the sugar and flour industries
All of us are aware of the fact that sugar and flour are basic foods that we use on an everyday basis. Only a few years back there was not much of a choice when entering a supermarket and looking for flour or sugar packages besides the typical one kilogram ones. “In the mean time there has been a rapid increase in the demand of green products and ready to use mixes as well as of types and sizes”, says Marcus Velezmoro, sales manager Dry Food, Bosch Packaging Technology. About 80 guests from 25 different countries took the chance of networking and knowledge transfer during the two-day event. So did Marcus Velezmoro, as well. He gave a lecture on innovative packaging solutions in sugar, flour, and grain. One of the highlights of the event was the plant visit to Waiblingen, where a new packaging concept was presented to the visitors.
Flexibility is in demand
In order to produce packages while saving material and to be able to react to market fluctuations more flexible and faster, sugar and flour producers have to rely on machines that meet those requirements. Bosch Packaging Technology offers two options with the mandrel wheel machine and vertical bagger for this challenging market. The new mandrel wheel machine can produce packages in different sizes and closings due to its flexible mandrel wheel technology. In addition, its high weight accuracy makes it a perfect choice for packaging sugar and flour.
Paper replaces plastics
Paper serving as a substitute for plastics – this is a new development project concerning a vertical bagger that uses paper instead of PE materials. A special paper is needed for the direct application of the sealing material. BillerudKorsnäs‘ experts provided the proper paper called Axello. Marcus Lager, business segment director at BillerudKorsnäs says “that this project can seriously challenge the traditional use of PE material in packaging“. Moreover, this new technology provides more options for bag sizes and closings. Therefore, packages can be catered exactly to the wishes and needs of buyers. For environmental conscious consumers paper wrapped products also offer the ideal mix of food safety and a decreased carbon foot print. By using paper based packaging materials one does not only save the environment but puts the finishing touches to organic products.
