Eisai Co., Ltd. is a research-based pharmaceutical company, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, that develops and markets pharmaceuticals worldwide. Guided by its corporate philosophy of “giving first thoughts to patients and their families”, and to increase the benefits health care provides, Eisai strives to fulfill its “human healthcare” (hhc) mission. Continuous investments in new machinery enable state-of-the-art production conditions. For many years, Bosch Packaging Technology has been a trusted partner for Eisai. Most recent joint projects include capsule filling machines, both for research and production purposes at different facilities around the globe.
Two exemplary projects
In Kawashima, for example, Eisai produces solid pharmaceuticals like tablets, capsules and granulates. Since 2006, the company relies on GKF 2500 ASB IPK capsule filling machines from Bosch. Eisai produces 800 million capsules of Selbex, a medicine used for the treatment of gastritis and gastric ulcer, every year. The reasons for choosing the GKF 2500 ASB IPK are obvious: Eisai could vastly improve its Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), and the machine is able to achieve real lights-out-operations for higher productivity.
The new GKF 1400 ASB 100% installed at Eisai’s UK facility is used to fill the antiepileptic medicine Zonegran. The capsule filling machine is the first of its kind for the UK plant, adding a new solid dose operation to the portfolio. Within an extremely tight timeframe of three months, Bosch built and delivered the customized machine. Its filling accuracy results in very low reject rates and the 100 per cent checkweigher ensures that each capsule is individually weighed and recorded.
To be continued
These two projects are not the first, and definitely not the last joint ventures of the two global players. Eisai and Bosch will continue their international cooperation: “When it comes to capsule filling projects, I contact Bosch,” underlines Hideo Murakami, capsule production manager at Eisai’s Kawashima plant.
